In an effort to come up with a speedy and available mounting system for my old but still functional Garmin GPS II+ unit, I decided to try velcro mounting the device to my installed RCU shelf. My first attempt at just velcroing the unit to the shelf worked but on very rough roads, the unit would jiggle itself loose after a time and require pressing down to resecure to the velcro.
In an effort to better stabilize the unit, I added a small aluminum L-bracket with velcro to secure the back as well as the bottom of the device. This has worked very well and has never come loose in the last year and a half that I've been using it this way. To reduce vibration and jiggle on rough roads, I take the batteries out of the unit...this reduces the weight substantially and it is now very solid. Easy to get on and off and no screws to lose or loosen.
The GPSII+ is similar in size to the III+ and V models that many riders use today. Mounting in this location allows the windscreen to be lowered fully without interfering with the GPS antenna.
